Social media has become a well known source for product design and development. Social media channels such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube are just a few examples where you can use social media for product design and development. Stephanie Gehman from The Social Media Examiner explores three ways to use social media for product development. She focuses on establishing your goals, asking the right questions/collecting the data and then using the data effectively.

Kit Smith from brandwatch.com outlined the eight stages for new product development including: idea generation, idea screening, concept development, testing, marketing strategy, product design, test marketing and bringing to the market. Kit Smith explains that social media can help in many of these stages providing faster feedback and cost effective strategies for product development.

Joan Schneider in the Harvard Business Review focused on 10 Tactics For Launching a Product Using Social Media. The 10 tactics listed offer various suggestions on how to successfully use social media to launch a product and to maintain ongoing feedback with customers. Sugar Savvy located in Kitchener, Ontario is an excellent example of utilizing social media for product launching and product development.

In an interview with Emilie of Sugar Savvy, she expressed the importance of using social media to help grow the business and stay current with customer needs and wants. Emilie explained her goal to create a survey that helps customers express their ideas and suggestions that will help shape the direction of Sugar Savvy. All it takes is a few minutes to read through some of the amazing reviews on Facebook to see that Sugar Savvy provides impeccable service and stays connected to their customers.

Lessons for Others

Sugar Savvy demonstrates the importance of a social media presence when launching and developing a product. Sugar Savvy began as a sugaring service and expanded to airbrush tanning, carrying natural beauty products, brow service and eyelash service.

In my interview with Emilie, I found her to be very professional, knowledgeable, warm and personable. I had the pleasure of utilizing her services and was very pleased with my results. I look very forward to seeing how Sugar Savvy continues to grow and expand!
