This story begins in 2007 when a new internet trend called Social Media is beginning to unfold. Numerous companies are reluctant to use it, calling it a passing notion and block their employees from social sites at work. While others are immediately recognizing the immense potential this new trend has and begin to wade their way through unchartered waters. Deloitte is one of those companies ‘getting their feet wet’ so to speak, but this post has nothing to do with water.
June 15, 2007 Deloitte launches The Deloitte Film Festival as part of a strategy to attract and retain the best talent. From June 15 to September 14, Deloitte encourages it’s employees to reinforce the brand by telling their Deloitte stories through film. The program brought together 39,783 employees, across 5 businesses, 75 offices and 2 continents to answer the question “What’s Your Deloitte?” The results were nothing less than outstanding. 630 employee teams registered, videos were posted and the teams promoted and shared their films like crazy. When it came time to vote for the winners, the campaign web site registered over 400,000 hits!
Irwin Goverman, Partner, Seattle, WA said
“This is the greatest morale building thing the firm has ever done. You have no idea how much buzz this has created.”
Commented Lori Jansma, Manager, Pittsburgh, PA
“When you look at other companies you realize how special this opportunity was.”
And the winner is…
Fast forward to 2015, video is only now emerging as the latest social media engagement tool. So was Deloitte blazing a trail back in 2007 & 2008. You bet! Did it work for them, you bet it did. And it continues. Deloitte has won numerous awards such as:
- Great Places to Work, Best Workplaces, Canada, 2015
- Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for 2015
- Canada’s Top 100 Employers for 2015
- Greater Toronto’s Top Employers for 2015
And, it is evident from their website alone that their employees are their greatest asset. Take a look for yourself. The link to Careers is right up at the top, front and center alongside Services and Industries, not buried at the bottom of the web page in a footer with links to the Privacy Policy and other Corporate fine print.
Most recently Deloitte took part in Impact Day. A day where Deloitte employees closed up shop and went out into communities around the globe to give back. Triumphs for the day were shared all over social media and once again Deloitte comes out a winner.
Lessons learned
Companies don’t need to be afraid to give their employees a voice. In fact encouraging them to share their opinions about the workplace can not only give leaders unbelievable insight into what drives their employees but it can also be their greatest tool to recruit new talent.
