Description of how social media is used for business performance:
Con-way is an industry leader in freight transportation and logistics in North America and worldwide through their Menlo Logistics organization. An innovative player in the Supply Chain industry, they have begun to use the Twitter social media tool as a means to link up Carriers with available Freight. For more details on the program follow the link here: http://www.con-way.com/en/about_con_way/newsroom/press_releases/Jun_2010/2010_jun_8/ . For a demonstration of how the Twitter feed works, go to this YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zL7h7kTU1M .
Lessons for others:
There appears to be some skepticism in the Supply Chain community about using Social Media as a tool (http://blogs.gartner.com/matthew-davis/2010/10/04/social-media-to-improve-supply-chain/ ) but here is an excellent example of how elements of the Supply Chain are embracing one of those Social Media tools and bringing buyers and suppliers together in a more efficient manner.
